Video: ‘Rory’s story’ shows inequalities of civil partnerships in Ireland

A short video clip about a boy and his two mothers shows the consequences of ‘discriminatory’ civil partnerships in Ireland.
Made by Marriage Equality Ireland, the clip, titled ‘Rory’s Story’, shows the family as happy and accepted until the day the law classes them as strangers.
Ireland legalised civil partnerships in January but gay rights campaigners say they are not good enough and are calling for full marriage equality.

Tory MP calls for churches to be banned from holding marriages if they refuse gay couples

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove, has called for churches to be banned from holding marriages if they refuse to perform civil partnerships for gay couples.
He says that the idea will bring more equality for gay couples.
In a letter (see below) to prime minister David Cameron, Mr Weatherley wrote: “As long as religious groups can refuse to preside over ceremonies for same-sex couples there will be inequality.
“Such behaviour is not be tolerated in other areas, such as adoption, after all.

Coventry woman sets up gay funeral service

A lesbian from Coventry has set up a funeral service specialising in ceremonies for gays and lesbians.
Angela Sanderson, 47, said she decided to set up the service after her sister’s funeral did not reflect the person she was.
Ms Sanderson, a student welfare at Coventry University, took a four-day course to qualify as a civil funeral celebrant last year and has now set up her service, called Rainbows End.
She says her civil ceremonies will sensitively reflect the deceased’s personality, views and beliefs, rather than those of a minister or religion.

Maltese LGBT community faces legal anomaly after discriminatory rule is revoked

The rights of the gay community in Malta have been left in disarray after EU intervention saw a restriction on migration struck from the law books.
The central Mediterranean group of islands which makes up the country has a strong Catholic ethos, which means gay couples have little in the way of governmental recognition.
Until this year, non-recognition of gay relationships was applied equally to Maltese citizens and to foreign nationals: those in other member states of the EU and in non-EU, third countries across the world.
