Preview: Tom Robinson, writer of ‘Glad to be Gay’, examines bisexuality for BBC Radio 4

Singer-songwriter Tom Robinson became a darling of the 1970s gay liberation movement with his song ‘Glad To Be Gay’ (see video and lyrics below).
But just a few years later, he fell in love with a woman and was booed at the 1987 London Pride event.
In a new programme for Radio 4 he examines how he came to terms with his sexuality and finds out how bisexual people in different parts of the UK cope with attitudes towards their relationships.
In the documentary, he meets bisexual people struggling to be understood by their straight and gay friends.

Maryland Governor: Gay marriage is possible but it will be a long fight

The governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley as well as the lieutenant governor,  Anthony Brown, have warned that it will be a long fight to win full gay marriage rights with the same legal status as straight married couples but that it is achievable.
Mr O’Malley who is a Democrat will support gay marriage legislation in the Maryland General Assembly.
Speaking at a fund-raiser for Equality Maryland he said: “This is about making sure that every family in Maryland is able to raise their children in a loving and stable home, a home that is respected equally under the law.”

‘God Hates Fags’ church to picket Ground Zero and Nevada National Guard funerals

The anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church, that protests at military funerals with signs saying ‘God Hates Fags’ will picket the funerals of three Nevada National Guard soldiers as well as protesting at the site of Ground Zero on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Video: US Department of Interior posts ‘It Gets Better’ clip

The US Department of the Interior has become the latest US government department to make an ‘It Gets Better’ film to give support to LGBT teenagers.
US Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar appears in a film which also contains federal employees from the National Parks Service and the US Geological Survey among others. In his segment, Mr Salazar says: ” Bullying happens everywhere in every school all across America. Make sure you are seeking help, that you are telling someone about it.”

Scottish man is first to be charged with transgender prejudice

A soldier has become the first person in Scotland to be convicted of an offence motivated by transphobia.
Terry Porter, 19, admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause fear and alarm and also admitted that the offence was aggravated by prejudice towards transgender status.
STV reports that the incident took place on May 8th at Whyte Place, Milnathort, while Porter was out celebrating being accepted into the Army.
The court was told that he targeted transgender woman Chloe Dow, calling her a “freak” and a “mutant”.

Scottish domestic violence stereotypes ‘fail gay and transgender people’

The Scottish government’s definition of domestic violence leaves some victims ‘invisible’, a law lecturer has claimed.
Brian Dempsey, who teaches at the University of Dundee in Scotland, said that the standard view of male abusers and female victims means that LGBT people may be unable to access help.
