Thousands of primary school pupils reported for homophobia

Thousands of primary school aged children have been labelled as homophobic by their teachers in the past year, information released under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act has revealed.
The Manifesto Club, requested the information after media reports last year of childrens’ permanent educational records including references to alleged homophobic bullying.
The FOI reveals that 20,400 primary school children were labelled as homophobic or racist during the past academic year, the youngest child being just four years old.

Florida teacher suspended for Facebook anti-gay remarks

A Florida teacher who wrote on Facebook that he “almost threw up” when New York legalised gay marriage has been suspended.
Jerry Buell, a social studies teacher at Mount Dora High School, also wrote that gay marriages were a “cesspool” and a “sin”.
He was suspended by Lake County school district officials under a new social media policy for teaching staff.
Mr Buell made the comments on July 25th on his home computer. The school district says he will be given an administrative position while an investigation is carried out.

Academia ‘has ignored LGBT issues’

A new National Union of Students report says that LGBT issues have been “actively cut out” of education and academia.
The report, Liberation, Equality and Diversity in the Curriculum, says lessons in all subjects should try to be more “inclusive”, with focus on LGBT issues, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.
NUS LGBT officers Vicki Baars and Alan Bailey said: “As an LGBT campaign we believe that LGBT issues have been actively cut out of education and academia due to LGBTphobia.

More US schools warned about gay censorship

The American Civil Liberties Union has written to more schools to question their filters on LGBT support websites. As part of the group's 'Don't Filter Me' campaign, it has sent letters to schools in Michigan, Texas, Pennsylvania and Virginia, asking them to stop censoring the websites.

American schools have been warned to stop censoring educational lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender websites. The American Civil Liberties Union has written to school districts in Missouri and Michigan to warn that filtering such sites violates the constitution.
